About Archive of Our Own
As described on the OTW's project page,
The Archive of Our Own (AO3) is a non-profit, non-commercial archive for transformative fanworks; created by and for fans of books, music, art, games, shows, movies, real-person fiction (RPF), and other fandoms. It runs on open-source archiving software developed by the OTW.
AO3 entered open beta in November 2009. By February 2014, one million fanworks had been uploaded; and in October 2016, AO3 reached one million registered users. AO3 exited open beta in April 2026 with over 10 million registered users and 17 million fanworks across over 77,000 fandoms.
Further information can be found in the AO3 article on Fanlore (another OTW project!)
About the fanlisting
I realized this year that the previous AO3 fanlisting had been down for months, which inspired me to pick it back up. I have been on AO3 since 2013, which far from makes me one of the original players, but the impact it's had on Western fandom in the last decade is undeniable. Though I'll always carry nostalgia for the olden days of separate fan-archives, I'm appreciative of the efforts that have been made to ensure everyone has a place to host and share their fanworks, alongside inspiring others to do the same and join forces in preserving the history of fandom.
This fanlisting is of course named after the essay that first brought forth the idea of creating a new archive for fans by fans. The (very plain and minimalist) design is simply based on AO3's own default look. Everything was entirely coded by me. My apologies if anything is broken or scales incorrectly. Thank you for visiting!
