I remember browsing fanlistings when I was a kid. I signed up to some, which undoubtedly do not exist anymore, and always found the concept of them super interesting. Back then, it wasn't as easy to find people who had the same interests you did online; you had to reach out, you had to dig a little, you had to find your way into personal websites, closed communities, forum boards... The idea of a list of people who all liked the same thing, with their websites and e-mails, was definitely enticing!
Nowadays, it's as simple as browsing a hashtag or making a promo post... Yet I find myself once again drawn to this "obsolete" method of meeting other fans, even if it's become more decorative than anything else. I like making little buttons... I like designing pretty layouts... Can't that be the core of the fanlisting/shrine experience? Building a place for you to talk about the things you love, to reach out to those who feel the same?
Maybe I'm too late... but I still want to try. This is what Coquelicot aims to be.
The name Coquelicot comes from the French word for the red poppy flower, Papaver rhoeas. I came to this name through word association with another French word, "coqueluche", which was originally used to refer to whooping cough, but can also be used to refer to something or someone that's very popular, that's everybody's favorite. It's also just an underrated flower I love a lot! Plus, it makes for a good excuse to make red layouts.
Speaking of, this layout was inspired by the Pokémon merchandizing series Fleur de Coquelicot, depicting various Pokémons with, well, red poppies! It ran in 2023 and was Japan only. I stumbled upon the art by chance and thought it was super cute.
